State of JohnWallStreet Address

Welcome back to reality.

We start the new year with a State of JohnWallStreet Address. We’ll return to regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

Speaking of the regular schedule, JohnWallStreet is planning to publish its newsletter three times per week in ’24. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday will be the norm.

Ambitious plans are likely to prevent any further time head down writing.

JohnWallStreet will maintain an active events schedule in ‘24.

Back in September, we hosted the inaugural Fall Sports & Media Huddle. Rob Manfred, Donn Davis, and Steve Phelps headlined the ~100 person invite-only event.

We continue to see tremendous value in bringing a who’s who of the industry together for smart conversation and networking in a closed-door environment. So, we’re going to hold a Fall Huddle again in ’24, and we’re working to stage the inaugural Spring Sports & Media Huddle during this trip around the globe too.

JohnWallStreet also held a pair of Investment Mini-Camps in 2023. The interactive small room discussions, led by Eric Grubman and Chris Grove, drew investors representing ~$2 trillion worth of institutional capital alongside a collective of industry thought leaders. We will expand the public-equity focused series in ’24 and are planning to hold Mini-Camps quarterly.

While our Huddles and Mini-Camps are designed to exclusive in nature, JohnWallStreet has committed to participate in at least one event that will be open to the public this year. We are hosting a ‘sports and media track’ at the Next.io conference in New York City (March 6-7). The annual sports betting assemblage will draw more than 1,200 industry insiders and institutional investors.

Those attending the JWS track on March 7 should expect a robust lineup of high-profile speakers engaged in thought-provoking discussion on timely subjects. Charlie Ebersol, Eric Winston, Ahmad Nassar, Howard Lindzon, Roger Ehrenberg, and Matt Berry are among those committed to participate (MANY more names will be announced in the weeks ahead).

This event will sell out (it does every year). Buy your ticket now to ensure a seat and do so using the code JWSNYC. You’ll get a 5% discount and it will support our efforts!

We believe combining content with community is the winning formula. So, there will likely be some more informal gatherings in the year ahead too. More information to come on those opportunities (as well as the newsletter mailbag concept we’ve been workshopping).

But events are just one of the business lines we’re going to expand on in ‘24.

JohnWallStreet has found a niche helping to coordinate sports and media roadshows. We anticipate interest in that service growing as success stories begin to emerge.

JWS is also thriving as an advisory/consultancy. We’ll continue to take on projects and board positions where we can leverage our institutional knowledge, credibility, and robust rolodex to accelerate a business’ growth. And we’re increasing finding those tasked with navigating NIL and college sports’ rapidly changing landscape value our understanding of modern media and fan monetization (which is VERY different than asking for donations).

We’re getting in thematic research too.

JWS is actively working on a deep dive into the possibility of/opportunity for private equity in college sports. We’ve already interviewed more than 20 conference commissioners, athletic directors, PE investors, and other stakeholders on the subject, and expect to include the thoughts of more than 30 high-profile insiders before the report goes to print later this quarter.

While we have a lot else going on, we recognize that it all exists because of this newsletter. So, content will remain our top priority. We envision eventually returning to a five day/week publication as we build out the team.

We’re honored you choose to start each day with us promise to continue working hard to deliver the smartest writing in the space.

Here’s to a big year!
